Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life...

But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got heroin?




Škotski pisatelj Irwine Welsh je leta 1993 presenetil, šokiral in nazadnje navdušil bralsko javnost s svojim knjižnim prvencem Trainspotting — transgresivnim, nihilističnim, urbanim socialnim prikazom rejverske "generacije X", ki se brez kakršnihkoli moralnih normativov, želja in vizije prihodnosti v Leithu (predmestje škotske prestolnice Edinburgh) otopelo vdaja heroinski omami. Glavni junaki Renton, Sickboy, Begbie, Spud in drugi iz dneva v dan apatično zabijajo čas v razglabljanjih o Iggyju Popu, Louju Reedu in Seanu Conneryju, se lotevajo absurdnih delinkventnih podvigov, se na različne komično-tragične načine vklapljajo in obenem distancirajo od enolične konvencionalnosti in ujetosti v družbena pričakovanja ter imajo ob grotesknih heroinskih blodnjah občasne prebliske o tem, da bi se znebili usodne odvisnosti.

Ice cream, vanilla, one large tub of. Magnesia, milk of, one bottle. Paracetamol, mouthwash, vitamins. Mineral water, Lucozade, pornography. One mattress. One bucket for urine, one for feces and one for vomitus. One television and one bottle of Valium, which I've already procured from my mother, who is, in her own domestic and socially acceptable way also a drug addict. And now I'm ready. All I need is one final hit to soothe the pain while the Valium takes effect.



Producent in režiser Danny Boyle je filmsko javnost dve leti poprej presenetil že s prvencem za velika platna, mračnim kriminalnim trilerjem Shallow Grave (1994). Že s svojim drugim cineastičnim izdelkom — istoimensko priredbo tukaj omenjenega romana, perspektivično nelinearno napisanega v fonetičnem transkriptu robatega škotskega narečja ter naphanega z urbanim slengom in mamilarskim žargonom — pa se je za vekomaj zapisal med najboljše angleške (in svetovne) režiserje. Čeprav so v njegovi filmografiji same prvovrstne filmske zgodbe (A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire), ostaja Trainspotting njegov najbolj slaven, prepoznaven, morda (že zato, ker je med prvimi) celo najboljši dosežek. Knjiga in film sta hipoma prerasla v instantna kulta in navdih za cele skupnosti ljubiteljev avtorske, subverzivne, postmodernistične literature in kinematografije.

Swanney taught us to adore and respect the national health service. For it was the source of much of our gear. We stole drugs. We stole prescriptions or bought them, sold them, swapped them, forged them, photocopied them. Or traded drugs with cancer victims, alcoholics, old-age pensioners, AIDS patients, epileptics, and bored housewives.



Poleg angleškega režiserja je film v stratosfero povzdignil praktično vso, do tedaj razmeroma neznano škotsko glumaško zasedbo, recimo Ewana McGregorja (A Life Less Ordinary, Star Wars: ep. I., II., III., Moulin Rouge, Big Fish, Cassandra's Dream, Angels & Demons), Roberta Carlyla (The Full Monty, The World Is Not Enough, Angela's Ashes, The Beach, The 51st State), Petra Mullana (Orphans, My Name Is Joe, The Magdalene Sisters, Boy A), Jonnyja Leeja Millerja (Afterglow, Mansfield Park, The Flying Scotsman, serija Eli Stone), Ewena Bremnerja (Snatch, Julien Donkey-Boy, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down) in druge. Z nepozabnimi liki antijunakov, cinikov, kompulzivnih depresivnežev in sociopatov ter odlično interakcijo so skozi zabavne reference na popkulturo prikazali slikovito absurden svet zavožene generacije ("britanski Stekli psi" in "škotska Peklenska pomaranča" ter "Polnočni kavboj 90. let", kakor so film poimenovali nekateri kritiki) in pomenljivo metaforo bega pred utesnjujočo trivialno resničnostjo v halucinantno omamo; z nekaterimi satiričnimi namigi na britansko kolonialistično opresivnost.

Some hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonized by. We're ruled by effete assholes.

Ob legendarnem (po istoimenski knjigi posnetem) Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981) in pretresljivem Rekvijemu za sanje (2000) Darrena Aronofskega ga razen njegovega implicitnega družbenokritičnega aspekta štejem tudi za eno boljših filmskih interpretacij obsesivne heroinske (in še kakšne) zasvojenosti.



Mimogrede, trainspotting je skovanka za nenavaden (angleški) konjiček spremljanja vlakov, beleženja voznih redov ter zbiranja in izmenjevanja podatkov o lokomotivah. Metaforično in v širšem pomenu označuje tudi brezciljno postavanje in zabijanje časa z nesmiselnimi in nekoristnimi dejavnostmi (med drugim je tudi slengovski izraz za drogiranje).

In da ne pozabim najpomembnejšega: roman Trainspotting je v izvrstnem slovenskem prevodu izšel leta 1997 pri založbi DZS v zbirki Prvinski nagon izpod briljantnega peresa prevajalca, pisatelja in dramatika Andreja E. Skubica (Grenki med, Fužinski bluz, Norišnica). Toplo priporočam, če jo uspete kje dobiti. (Če izdam še, čigav obraz je po nekem čudnem naključju upodobljen na prirejeni slovenski naslovnici broširane izdaje te knjige, mi itak ne boste verjeli.)

  1. Super film, tudi sam bi mu dal devetko. Vrhunska drama o drogah s komičnim pridihom na Tarantino/Ritchiejevski način.
